Breast Cryoablation in St. Louis, Missouri
For select patients, breast cryoablation offers a way to treat certain tumors by freezing them, without traditional surgery, stitches, or extended recovery. One specialist. One location. Guidance at every step.
If you've been told you have an early-stage breast cancer, you may be dreading the next step: surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or some combination of all three. But depending on your specific diagnosis, there may be another option worth exploring.
Breast cryoablation uses precisely controlled liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy targeted tissue delivered through a single tiny probe, under local anesthesia, in under 45 minutes, no operating room, no stitches and no overnight stay. The surrounding healthy tissue is preserved. At Shero, everything happens in one place: your consultation, your imaging, your treatment, and your follow-up all under the care of Dr. Tish Singer, a board-certified, fellowship-trained breast radiologist who knows you and understands your case from day one.
At Shero, we perform cryoablation using the IceCure ProSense system, an FDA-cleared, clinically established platform that uses liquid nitrogen to deliver precisely controlled cold through a single cryoprobe under real-time ultrasound guidance, with excellent outcomes and minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissue.
Why Women Are Exploring Cryoablation
The women who come to Shero for cryoablation are looking for a treatment that is less invasive than surgery and that is clinically supported. Depending on your diagnosis and imaging findings, you may be a candidate if you:
Have a fibroadenoma that is painful, growing, or causing anxiety, and want it taken care of without surgery
Have been diagnosed with a small, early-stage breast cancer and want to explore a less invasive, evidence-based approach, or are not an ideal candidate for surgery due to age or other health considerations
Want to avoid the visible scarring, recovery time, and disruption of your busy schedule that comes with an operating room procedure
Need to return to work, your family, or your life within days, not weeks
Want one doctor, one team, and one location managing your entire experience
Not sure if you qualify? Schedule a consultation. Dr. Singer will give you an honest, individualized answer.
Everything in One Place, Under One Specialist
Most healthcare settings do not offer breast cryoablation as a readily accessible option, and until now, there has been no dedicated liquid nitrogen cryoablation program in St. Louis or the broader Midwest. For most women, the only options presented are surgery. At Shero, we offer a different path.
From your first consultation through your final follow-up imaging, you will be cared for by Dr. Tish Singer, a fellowship-trained breast imaging specialist with deep experience in interventional breast procedures. Dr. Singer will review your imaging, confirm your candidacy, perform your procedure, and guide your recovery without handoffs, repeat explanations, and the coordination burden that so often falls on patients. Most patients are seen within days, not weeks.
For patients with a breast cancer diagnosis, our Nurse Navigator program provides an additional layer of support, helping you understand your results, coordinate any further referrals, and navigate every step of what comes next. Learn more about Shero Nurse Navigation.
Clinical Results
The procedure itself is described in detail below, but the clinical evidence behind it is strong. For fibroadenomas, published data shows treated lesions reduce in size by 73–89% within the first year, with the treated tissue gradually shrinking and being reabsorbed by the body. For early-stage breast cancers, clinical trials have reported up to 100% successful tumor ablation for cancers under 1 cm and 90% for cancers under 2 cm.
What to Expect
Before Your Procedure
You will begin with a consultation and imaging review with Dr. Singer to confirm your diagnosis and candidacy. This may include contrast-enhanced mammography or MRI to fully assess your tumor and inform treatment planning. We will walk you through exactly what to expect so that you arrive prepared and confident.
During Your Procedure
Cryoablation is performed in our ultrasound suite under local anesthesia. Dr. Singer places the probe under real-time imaging guidance and delivers the controlled cold therapy to the targeted tissue. The procedure itself takes about an hour, with the full visit completed in approximately two hours.
After Your Procedure
Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. It is normal to experience mild soreness, bruising, slight swelling, or minor drainage at the treatment site in the days following the procedure. A small, firm area may be felt at the ablation zone. This is expected and will gradually decrease in size over the following months as the treated tissue is naturally reabsorbed. We recommend wearing a supportive bra for comfort, keeping the insertion site clean and dry for the first 24 hours, and avoiding strenuous upper-body activity or heavy lifting for 48–72 hours.

Is Cryoablation Right for You?
Candidacy depends on your specific imaging findings, diagnosis, and overall health picture. For breast cancer patients, the best candidates typically have small, early-stage tumors that are well visualized on ultrasound. Certain tumor types including: lobular carcinoma, triple-negative breast cancer, and tumors with an extensive ductal component may not be suitable for cryoablation. Dr. Singer will review your case thoroughly including all imaging and pathology to give you an honest, individualized assessment. We will also work collaboratively with your referring physician to ensure that cryoablation fits appropriately within your broader treatment plan.
If you are not a candidate, we will communicate this clearly and help connect you with the most suitable next step for you. For breast cancer patients, it is important to understand that cryoablation addresses local treatment of the tumor only. It does not take the place of other components of your care such as radiation therapy, systemic treatment, or surgical evaluation of the lymph nodes. Your full treatment plan will be coordinated with your oncology team.
