About Screening Ultrasounds
What is a Breast Ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the inside of the breast. It helps doctors assess breast tissue and is often used alongside other screening tools like mammograms. What can a mammogram detect?
Who Needs a Breast Ultrasound?
Breast ultrasounds are recommended for:
Individuals with a breast lump or abnormal mammogram results
Women with dense breast tissue (where mammograms may be less effective)
People at high risk for breast cancer
Individuals undergoing biopsy guidance or follow-up imaging
What Can a Breast Ultrasound Detect?
A breast ultrasound can help identify:
Cysts (fluid-filled sacs) vs. solid masses
Benign vs. suspicious growths
Lumps not visible on a mammogram
Breast infections or abscesses
Changes in existing lumps
What to Expect During a Breast Ultrasound
You’ll lie on your back or side on an exam table.
A clear gel is applied to your skin to help the transducer (a handheld device) glide easily.
The transducer sends sound waves into the breast and captures echoes to form images.
The procedure is painless and typically takes 15–30 minutes.
There is no radiation exposure.
Do’s and Don’ts Before a Breast Ultrasound
Do’s:
Inform your doctor about any symptoms or previous breast procedures.
Bring prior breast imaging results, if available.
Don’ts:
Don’t apply lotions, powders, or deodorants on your chest or underarms the day of the exam, as these may affect image clarity.
Don’t eat or drink restrictions are needed—it’s not a fasting procedure.
