About Mammograms
What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray exam of the breast used to detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. It helps identify abnormalities and is used for routine screening or to investigate specific breast concerns.
What can a mammogram detect?
Tumors
Masses or lumps
Microcalcifications
Cysts
Fibroadenomas
What to expect during a Mammogram:
You will be asked to undress from the waist up in a private area and will be given a robe to wear.
A member of our care team will take you to the mammography room.
A trained technician will position one breast at a time on a flat support plate of the X-ray machine. Another plate will press down to gently but firmly compress your breast for a few seconds.
Two images are typically required of each breast, from different angles.
The entire process usually takes between 20-30 minutes.
Why do I need a Mammogram?
Even people without risk factors benefit from routine screening, as most breast cancers occur in those with no known risks.
Preparing For Your Mammogram - Do’s and Dont’s:
Schedule your mammogram for a time when your breasts are least likely to be tender, such as one week after your period.
Avoid using deodorant, antiperspirant, powders, lotions, creams or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam.
Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top and bra for the exam.
Bring previous mammogram images or records if you have them.
Discuss any breast symptoms, changes, or relevant medical history.
Remove necklaces and jewelry from your upper body before the exam.
Take your usual medications and eat normally unless instructed otherwise.
If you are concerned about discomfort, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen on the morning of your mammogram and avoid salty food the day before.
